The crew packed up, the dumpster is gone, and your home has a new roof. For many Northern Virginia homeowners, this feels like the finish line. In practice, the weeks and months after installation determine whether your roof delivers on its full potential -- or develops preventable problems that cut its lifespan short.
Post roof installation support isn't just about having someone to call if something goes wrong. It's about warranty activation, maintenance education, seasonal inspections, and building a relationship with a contractor who stays accountable long after the invoice is paid.
Here's what Nest Exteriors provides after every installation, and what every homeowner should do to protect their investment.
Week 1: Warranty Registration and Documentation
What Nest Handles
Within 48 hours of project completion, we submit your warranty registration to CertainTeed. This isn't optional paperwork -- it's what activates your enhanced warranty coverage. Without registration, you default to the standard warranty tier regardless of which products were installed or which credential level your contractor holds.
For projects qualifying for the CertainTeed SureStart PLUS 5-Star Warranty, registration locks in:
- Up to 50 years of non-prorated material coverage
- 25 years of manufacturer-backed workmanship coverage
- Full labor and tear-off coverage during the non-prorated period
What You Receive
After registration is confirmed, we provide:
- Warranty certificate from CertainTeed documenting your coverage tier and terms
- Installation photos showing the completed roof from multiple angles
- Material documentation listing every product installed (brand, product line, color, quantity)
- Maintenance guidelines specific to your installed products
- Nest Exteriors workmanship warranty documentation covering 10 years of installation-related issues
Month 1: The First Follow-Up
Post-Installation Check
About 2-4 weeks after installation, a Nest Exteriors team member follows up to:
- Confirm your satisfaction with the completed work
- Address any questions that have come up since installation
- Verify that shingle adhesive strips have sealed properly (this happens through sun exposure and typically takes 2-4 warm weeks)
- Check for any debris the cleanup may have missed
- Confirm you received your warranty documentation
Seasonal Maintenance: Your Roof's Best Defense
A properly installed roof in Northern Virginia should last 30-50 years with appropriate maintenance. Here's the seasonal schedule we recommend:
Spring (March - May)
After winter storms clear:- Walk the perimeter and look for missing, cracked, or displaced shingles from ice and wind events
- Check gutters for granule accumulation -- some granule loss is normal on new roofs during the first year, but heavy amounts on an established roof indicate deterioration
- Verify downspouts are directing water away from the foundation
- Look for moss or algae growth on north-facing slopes, common in shaded areas of Burke, Reston, and Clifton
- Check for ice dam damage along eaves -- warped drip edge, lifted shingles, or stained fascia
Summer (June - August)
Peak storm season in NoVA:- After any significant thunderstorm, hail event, or wind storm, do a ground-level visual check
- Look for downed tree limbs, debris accumulation, or displaced flashing
- Verify attic ventilation is working -- your attic shouldn't be dramatically hotter than outside temperature on a hot day, assuming proper ventilation and insulation
- If you notice new water stains on interior ceilings, contact us right away -- summer storms can drive water through compromised areas fast
Fall (September - November)
Preparation for winter:- Clear leaves and debris from gutters and downspouts -- this is critical in heavily treed neighborhoods across Fairfax and Loudoun counties
- Trim branches that are within 6 feet of the roof surface
- Check pipe boots and exposed flashing for signs of cracking or separation
- Verify soffit vents aren't blocked by insulation or debris
Winter (December - February)
After snow events:- Let snow melt naturally -- don't try to shovel your roof
- Watch for ice dam formation along eaves, particularly on north-facing slopes and areas above heated spaces
- If ice dams form, call a professional rather than attempting removal yourself
- After any significant snow load (8+ inches), monitor your attic for signs of moisture from condensation
Gutter Maintenance After a New Roof
Your gutters interact directly with your roofing system. Neglected gutters undermine even the best roof installation.
Cleaning Schedule
In Northern Virginia's tree-heavy landscape, gutters need cleaning at least twice per year -- once after leaves drop in fall and once after pollen and spring debris settle. Homes surrounded by oak, pine, or hickory trees may need quarterly cleaning.
If your roof replacement included new Englert seamless aluminum gutters, they're built to handle the volume of water your new roof channels. But no gutter system works when it's clogged.
Gutter Guard Considerations
If you're tired of cleaning gutters, ask about gutter guard options during your follow-up. Adding guards after installation is straightforward and won't affect your roofing warranty.
When to Call Nest After Installation
Call Immediately If
- You discover an active leak or water intrusion
- A storm causes visible damage to shingles, flashing, or vents
- A tree or large limb falls on or near the roof
- You notice significant granule accumulation in gutters (beyond the normal first-year shedding)
- Any part of the roof appears to sag or dip
Schedule a Non-Emergency Visit For
- Questions about maintenance best practices
- Requests for a seasonal inspection
- Preparation for a home sale (we can provide a written condition report)
- Interest in additional exterior work -- siding, windows, doors, or gutters
Storm Response
After major storm events that hit Northern Virginia -- and they happen several times per year -- Nest Exteriors proactively reaches out to recent customers in affected areas. We offer priority inspection scheduling for homes we've worked on, because we know the roof system and can assess damage quickly.
If storm damage occurs and you need to file an insurance claim, we provide the same documentation and adjuster support described in our home insurance coverage guide.
